As the leaves change and the crisp air of autumn settles in, we’re reminded of the natural cycle of change around us. For many, the shifting seasons mirror the transitions we face in life – some welcome, others challenging. At the McCall Behavioral Health Network, we understand the complexities of change and the fear that often accompanies it. McCall’s Director of Mental Health, John Fecteau, LCSW, recognizes that embracing change is crucial to personal growth and resilience.
“Change is inevitable,” John notes. “We oftentimes have quite a bit of fear over embracing any kind of change because of the uncertainty that’s out there. The idea is to try to break out of some of those old patterns and to embrace change.”
Focus on growth and opportunity.
It’s important to have a growth mindset in which you focus on growth and learning instead of clinging to the old ways of dealing with things. As John puts it, “It opens up a whole new world for you where you start to see challenges as opportunities and mistakes as learning opportunities and not failure.”
John suggests setting small, measurable goals as a way to approach change. These “baby steps” offer tangible progress without setting too large of a goal. Instead of saying, “I’ll quit smoking forever,” try breaking it down into manageable steps – quit for a day, an hour, whatever feels achievable.
Don’t compare yourself to others.
One key to navigating change is avoiding comparisons to others. In other words, your journey is your own. “The only person you should compare yourself to is yourself,” John points out. Focusing on personal progress, no matter how small, helps build self-esteem and strengthens the resolve to face new challenges.
For those needing support during times of change, McCall offers a wide range of services to help guide you through your journey. Whether you’re grappling with mental health challenges or seeking personal growth, McCall is here to help. Change is hard, but you don’t have to go through it alone.
If you or someone you know could benefit from guidance in managing life’s transitions, the McCall Network offers comprehensive support. Visit mccallbhn.org or call 860.496.2100 for more information. Whether big or small, embracing change is the first step toward a brighter, healthier future.
