A note from our President and CEO
Dear Friends:
Too often, people in crisis tell themselves, “Well, I did it to myself,” and sink deeper into shame and self condemnation. But at McCall, we know a powerful truth—healing begins with compassion. When someone feels trapped by despair, that thought becomes a heavy weight, keeping them stuck in cycles of blame, anger, or hopelessness. Instead of sparking change, it deepens the pain. At such pivotal moments, the real way forward isn’t through greater shame or punishment—it’s achieved with compassion, trust, and human connection.
This can be surprising to most of us. We’ve been taught to believe that through shame and punishment, we will learn the tough lessons needed to make a change in our behavior. We’ve been conditioned to believe that compassion is the opposite of accountability.
However, research supports the benefits of consistent, caring connection. When someone in despair meets with a compassionate outreach worker again and again, trust grows—and so does hope. That’s when recovery takes root.
Your gift connects individuals in their darkest moment to skilled, caring clinicians. Your donation supports essential services that lead to health, safety, and recovery. Together, we can keep walking people out of the darkness and into the light. Thank you for making that journey possible.
With love and gratitude,
Maria Coutant Skinner, LCSW
President and Chief Executive Officer
