May 20, 2025

The arrival of May brings warmer weather, plants and flowers in bloom, and Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s an ideal time to check in on where we are—individually and collectively—with our mental wellbeing. This includes how we think, feel, and function every day.
While the conversation around mental health has grown in recent years, this month is a powerful reminder that awareness is just the beginning—action is what truly makes a difference.
The impact of mental health issues.
Each year, millions of Americans face mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. In 2023, more than 1 in 5 adults reported struggling with a mental health condition. Here in Connecticut, suicide remains one of the top three leading causes of death among people ages 18–34—a heartbreaking reminder of how urgent this issue remains.
The good news is that, just like physical health, mental health can be nurtured and strengthened. Here are a few small but effective ways to care for your mental wellbeing:
- Short, frequent conversations are more impactful than one big talk.
- Talking often builds an open, trusting relationship with your child.
- Be clear about your views and rules regarding alcohol.
- Understand that as your child grows, the conversation will evolve.
- Listen just as much as you speak—this is a two-way conversation.
- Remember, your actions speak as loudly as your words.
Overcoming stigma.
