As we transition from winter to spring, it’s the perfect opportunity to reset and put ourselves in a positive, balanced place. How can we accomplish this? We asked Kelly Scherker, BA, McCall’s Supervisor of Supported Employment and Integrative Therapies.
“Be intentional,” Kelly advises, “and take that first step in order to bring wellness into your life and then just keep going.” It helps that there are natural occurrences happening all around us at this time of year, such as daylight savings time, that can fuel our ability to be intentional.
Do what’s right for you.
Keep in mind, the wellness journey is different for everyone. “You have to allow yourself to feel the powerful energies manifesting around you,” Kelly explains. “It’s really important that you focus on your wellness because it’s critical to managing daily stress and unexpected life disruptions that come up.”
Kelly recommends two different methods of improving your wellbeing. One is to have techniques that are planned and that you engage in consistently, where you’re in the moment doing something that you enjoy. It could be spending time with family and friends or going for a run or finding an activity that lets your creativity shine.
The other method is to find healthy, spontaneous ways to self-soothe in the moment when consistent practices aren’t enough to help us cope with a challenging situation. Kelly suggests that people should engage in their senses—sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch. “It helps you feel more comfortable in your body,” Kelly notes. Some examples include finding something peaceful to look at in nature, lighting incense or a scented candle, even making a cup of herbal tea.
“One of my personal favorites is using sensory fidget gadgets to engage your sense of touch,” says Kelly. “I always seem to have Slinkies and crystals in my bag.”
The importance of integrative therapies.
What else can you do to refresh your approach to wellness as we reach springtime? “I encourage everybody to look up the Wellness Wheel,” Kelly suggests. “You can google it.” The Wellness Wheel helps you to focus on certain areas of your life in order to improve your overall wellbeing.
“McCall has really embraced this idea of wellness and integrative therapy, says Kelly. “We’ve been working to incorporate holistic modalities into all programs across all levels of care. We want to make sure that everybody—no matter what stage of the journey of recovery they’re in—is being given the opportunity to improve their own wellness in whatever way is best for them.”
McCall’s integrative therapies include Reiki, Qigong, fitness groups, yoga, sound healing, drumming circles, Adventure Recovery, pet therapy, and more. For further details, visit the Holistic Therapies page on the McCall website, or call us at 800.466.2100.
